Updates

Dear Friends,

Greetings!!!

You are receiving updates from Bihar Development Trust at slightly irregular intervals. I apologize for that. I personally went through very tough times through illness and financial bankruptcy. Bihar Development Trust also went through credit crunch due to drying up of credit in sub prime turmoil. All funding agency delayed loans which were due. To manage my expenses, I have to ask my friends and look for work.

Now, We are happy to say that Bihar Development Trust survived the test. Somehow, We survived with your support and well wishes. You all were very much supportive of us during the tough times. I am also not looking for work now in external agencies. My plate is full from BDT itself.

Since last 4 months, there were no new group formation and very little disbursement. Our group processes went into tailspin due to non disbursement of loans in field. New groups without loans disintegrated. We were into a shell and focusing on just surviving somehow. Now, we have regrouped and group processes have begun and new loan disbursement has begun. Many well-wishers have donated money in these tough times. We are thankful to them for supporting us in crisis.

We did flood relief work in month of Sep 2008. It was done in kharik block with support of CARE TODAY. We provided food and clothing’s to 11000 people affected by flood. Our work was covered by INDIA TODAY & AAJTAK.

Now, We have received sanction notes of

Rs.2000,000 from TMN Lucknow
Rs.1000,000 from Indian Bank
Rs. 500,000 from FWWB
Rs. 500,000 from RGVN
Rs. 625,000 from SIDBI as grant

Our proposals are in process with

AXIS BANK of Rs.2000,000
UNION BANK OF INDIA of Rs.2000,000
SBI of Rs.10,000,000
BOI of Rs. 5000,000
FWWB of Rs.4000,000
BASIX of Rs.2000,000

We plan to raise Rs.10,000,000 in next one year time duration.

TASAR SILK WEAVERS LIVELIHOOD INITIATIVE

We have initiated the formation of Producer Company for 50 weavers in Lodipur Village, Sabaur Block, Bhagalpur. The community has elected directors for the company. We have executed work worth more than Rs.600,000 through them. We are in process of executing Rs.2000,000 orders from various partners.

Our buyers include IIM Ahmedabad, Community Friendly Movement, Kamdhenu Trust.

Our E Commerce partner includes MAKE TICK FOUNDATION, USA & DRISHTI NOIDA.

Potential buyers include XLRI & IIM Kozikode.

DAIRY INITIATIVE

We are in process of organising dairy farmers in villages around Bhagalpur. We are doing what AMUL did 60 years ago. We will be setting up procurement centers and chilling plant and begin with 5000 litres. Buyers have been arranged for the milk we will be collecting through our channel. Our focus is in KOLKATA Market. What bombay did from Anand, We hope that Kolkata do it for Bhagalpur. AIF is supporting us for our Dairy initiatives.

Mr. Dev Kumar Dubey visited BANGLADESH and visited the birth place of microfianance and met icons like Mr. Saifuddin Chowdhary of ASA. We are motivated by success of ASA, GRAMIN etc.

Our team is motivated and going in full flow. We are getting addicted to grow BDT as the biggest enterprise of Bihar & Then India.

We need your support for achieving this dream

Regards

Ravi Chandra

Entrepreneurship fund raising travails

Dear Friends,

Greetings!!!

I would like to know about fund raising methods employed by member organisation when they were start up.

Bihar Development Trust is an emerging MFI in Bihar. It has been promoted by young IRMA graduates of 2006 batch. We are spread up in 50 villages, 6 blocks, two districts ( Bhagalpur & Patna). We are following grameen model.

As usual we started with our own money and friends, well wishers money. With effort, we were able to get funding from FWWB, RGVN, BASIX & Trust Microfin Network, Lucknow.

Then, the India macro economic scenario got worse and government and RBI panicking about inflation and started absorbing excess money from market. Interest rates are rising and credit squeeze are happening.

In this scenario, small fledgling organisation like us are suffering credit drought. I am moving around all banks and funding agencies.

The basic bottleneck faced by us is 3000 members and 3 year experience. On one side, sector is devoid of professionally promoted & managed microfinance organisation , on the other side, if some professionally qualified person begins its entrepreneurial journey, he is encouraged only by words but not by deeds of funding agencies or agencies like SIDBI, Indian Bank, NABARD etc.

We are one of the rare breeds of professionally qualified individuals slugging out in Bihar. We are feeling like players of roman collossium who are destined to die with all funding agencies and support organisation watching and getting their thrill of our fight. If we die, then also you will clap and cheer and if we survive, then also all funding agencies and support agencies officials will clap and cheers.

Every professional and consultant worth its salt will harp on robust system processes and control system. Even, if some one does not understand how does these processes translates during implementation, these shallow consultants go on harping their jargons about system and processes.

I am getting fed up with all gyan given by these funding agencies and so called capacity building and support organisation who just jump on any new organisation to sell their so called systems and processes.

The issue is that professionally qualified professionals from IRMA/IIM/TISS/IIFM etc are trying to slug out in eastern part of india. They are facing chicken or egg first problem. Funding agencies ask them to attain size but dont give money to grow to that size.

So, how start up like us grow if no fund is made availble to them?

I would like some members who have gone through this experience and made it big share their story. I would like members who are going through the ordeal also to share their story.

I am thankful to all my friends, well wishers and funding agencies for helping us to growing to this stage and understanding the challenges associated with entrepreneurship.

Regards

Ravi Chandra

Funding support required for Bihar Development Trust

Dear Friends,

Greetings!

Bihar Development Trust is going through growth pains. We are growing rapidly. We have disbursed more than Rs.900,000 to more than 160 women borrowers and hope to cross Rs.1000,000 mile stone in this week. More than 160 women borrowers are returning Rs.20,000 every week also.

You all have supported us all through. You are witnessing a home grown enterprise growing up in Bihar. This organisation has not been started by some Ambanis or money bags that you found in abundance in Bihar. You are learning about Bihar Development Trust regularly through e mails. This organisation has been started by two middle class youngsters who faced social and family and professional resistance but did it. Bihar Development Trust can be the next TATA but rooted in Bihar. We have survived for 14 months and determined to survive for all times to come.

You are aware of our financial and moral integrity through blogs and websites like www.bihardev.pbwiki,com , www.bihardev.org.in , www.bihardev.blogspot.com . You can visit our photos http://picasaweb.google.com/rchandra1231/

The crux of the arguement is that you need to support us financially. We are willing to accept highest level of scrutiny from you. You can ask people who have supported us financially. They are part of this group. You can mail to the group enquiring about credential of Bihar Development Trust . People who have supported us will reply to you.

You all agree that Bihar needs investment on multiple front be it health, education, water and sanitation or microfinance. We believe that people are capable of taking care of themsleves once they get access to credit and market. We are working on giving them access to credit and market so that income levels of people go up.

Bihar is witnessing a silent revolution by enterpreneurs like us whom Indian diaspora & citizens and in particular Bihari diaspora, citizens should support.

Discussing on Bihar will not help bihar much. You need to put money where your mouth is. You were looking for an honest initiative that cuts the clutter of corruption. Bihar Development Trust is here. You need to believe in us and our vision.

We are getting institutional funding support but we need individual support to maintain the overhead cost. After all, providing benefits to people entails some cost. You people need to rise up to support us.

We are competing for your financial support. You appraise our potential and put your money where you get the highest social return of your investments.

Waiting for your queries and brickbats

Regards

Ravi Chandra

Support Bihar Development Trust

Dear Friends,

Greetings from BDT!!!

We have disbursed more than Rs.900,000 to more than 160 women borrowers. Our disbursement is increasing by 70% every month.

The disbursement trend is given below.
Till 31st March, 2008 - Rs. 367,000
Till 30th April- Rs.622,000
Till 20th May- Rs.905,000

We hope to cross disbursement of Rs.1000,000 this month. We have a outstanding of Rs.710,000 at this moment. We are recieving our repayment regularly. We are recieving more than Rs.20,000 as repayments every week.

As you are observing that our pace of disbursement has increasing, I need to raise matching funds. The funding agency take their own sweet time for disbursement. We have recieved Rs.417,734 in the beginning of month from BASIX. We will be recieving Rs.600,000 from BASIX any time soon. We have Rs.110,000 in our bank account. This is sufficient for one week only.If the BASIX money comes in 3-4 days, we are just saved otherwise we may to defer the loan disbursement for a week. We do not want to do that.

Our need is given below

Months Expected Cumulative No. of Groups Expected Cumulative No. of Borrowers Expected Cumulative Disbursement
groups borrowers cumulative disbursement
May 90 180 1,040,000
June 130 250 1,600,000
July 180 340 2,320,000
August 230 460 3,120,000
September 290 660 3,920,000
October 350 900 4,720,000
November 410 1200 6,220,000
December 480 1500 7,720,000
January 550 1800 9,220,000
February 630 2100 10,720,000
March 710 2400 12,220,000

We hope to recieve 500,000 from TMN and 3,000,000 from FWWB in july. This would be sufficient for september.
The current situation is that BANKs are hesistating to lend us. We are not that creditworthy as we do not assets to match the loan amount. Funding agencies are loosening their purse strings slowly. We are trying hard to convince them to give more money. Without credit, we will be finding hard to sustain. To put in nutshell, our operative cost is Rs.100,000 per month and we are earning around 16000 per month. This deflicit will be made up when we reach the disbursement of Rs.9000,0000. We need that much amount of money in this year.

Through supporters like you, I requests you to find institutions with surplus money to support us as loan. Anyone is free to visit us and appraise our systems and processes and can check the beneficiaries directly in villages. The photos are uploaded on http://picasaweb.google.com/rchandra1231
We are supporting livelihood of 16 staff members and trying to increase the income of 100s of poor women borrowers. We have stopped two migration to Delhi and one person from Delhi has come back and joined us as staff member. Its better to earn Rs.3000 in home town than Rs.7000 in delhi.

I can not say in many words that I need money . This money will change the life of atleast 2000 people of Bihar this year. Once we are a success story, we hope to brings 1000s of crores of investment to Bihar on our shoulder.

So, I am doing my best in grounds of Bihar and rest I leave to wellwishers and almighty god.

Thanks for reading

Social Investment Platform

Dear Friends,

Greetings!

Bihar Development Trust has disbursed more than Rs.700,000 to more than 135 women borrowers in villages of Bhagalpur and Patna. We have got Rs.140,000 from these borrowers also. We are going ahead with our plans. All this has been possible due to you well wishes and contribution.

As we are moving ahead, we need more and more money to disburse to women members. We need loan from people who can trust us. People who are willing to give loans to us can inspect our accounts and do a appraisal of our work.

We are looking for loan amount of Rs.100,000 or more which can be repaid in one year or two years. The interest will be paid @12% per annum on reducing balance. This rate of interest in more than the interest rate earned on fixed deposits. We need Rs. 500,000 every month.

We are seeking people who believe in microfinance and recogonise its potential in economic development of Bihar. We are a social investment platform. People who believe that Bihar should develop economically should invest in us. Microfinance is a proven solution for increase in income for poor people who are engaged in any economic activity.

Many among you has supported us which has helped us to reach at this level. We need to grow and show a successful model emerging out of Bihar.

So please support us by giving us loan or access to loans. You can put us in direct contacts of any investor or banks above than CGM level( minimum state head) so that we cam present our plans to them.

Already in our seven months of operation, we have seen few positive impacts of microfinance. Our belief and respect in people of bihar has been increasing day by day. We are capable of becoming most prosperous state of India. We need investment.

Kindly invest in Bihar Development Trust.

growth issue

Dear Friends,

Greetings!

I am very happy to report you about our progress. Bihar Development Trust has crossed Rs. 300,000 in disbursement. Till now, 68 women borrowers have been benefited through our SAMVRIDHI microfinance programme. The loan outstanding is around Rs. 255,000.

We have 30 groups of women in Bhagalpur. The effort to form groups in urban Patna is on. We hope to end with 40 groups by March 2008.We have gone slow in group formation for a simple reason that we do not have finances tied up to disburse loan to another 72 women. We hope to cross Rs. 400,000 in disbursement by March 2008.

We are facing human resource crunch also as it is tough to attract people in low salary around 2000. So, we are thinking of raising salary in near future. We have taken rented office in both Patna and Bhagalpur. We have bought a motorcycle. The operation cost is baloonning up.

We hope to recieve loan and some grant from BASIX LAMP Fund by 30 march.

We are facing the classic chicken egg problem. No one is giving money till we grow big( means portfolio in 20-30 lacs) and unless some one gives 20-30 lacs rupees we can not create that big portfolio. Now, there are another set of support agencies whose approval are necessary to get Big funding agencies to nod. To get tieups from them also requires money.

A wholesale microfinance agency gave the following comment

'' Ravi ji, aap koi big daddy dhundhiye. Ye laptop le ke ghumne se MicroFinance me paise nahi milenge.''

So, the issue is how do we grow up? From where do I find big daddy?

We are open to evaluation, audit etc. We want some one to examine our systems and give suggestions to improve up. We are doing our best to learn and implement. We will find solutions but need help and guidance from seniors and peers.

Although, the going is getting tough, but we have resolved to mobilise Rs.15,000,000 in loans and grant in year 2008-2009

Can anyone help us regarding motivating some support agencies to select us as partner under their agenda of supporting new MFI?

Regards

Ravi Chandra

Bihar Development Trust views

Dear Friends,

I am reading lot of passionate mails that are send by the members. I find all mails right from the perspective with which they are being written. Suddenly we are flooded with negative and disturbing news that are hurting our identity India.

I was thinking from the employment creation side. I am disturbed by the fact that we are not able to provide employment to those who are coming back. Each of them who are coming has a marketable skill which they can not sell in Bihar. In other words, they can not earn money in Bihar either because they have no such industry or services or no one is willing to pay similar prices on purchasing power terms which they are getting in Mumbai or Maharashtra.

In economics, there is concept of reservation price. It means I will prefer to remain unemployed unless some one pays me my reservation( minimum acceptable ) price. So, this will be at work in Bihar for those who are coming back. Depending on staying power of each family, the reservation price will be high or low.

I hope that I am able to reach that stage where I can create millions of job through agri business, dairy, micro finance and handicrafts integration .
I need support of fellow people to join us. Bihar is an oppurtunity . All we need one among us spotting an oppurtunity and jumping right into it . Believe in an idea and execute it giving your sweat, blood and life and It will be done. There is chance of making billions of dollar in Bihar in field like fruit and vegetable, IT, Education, health, manufacturing, tourism, consulting, wellness etc.

There is need of people who can sustain themselves for 2-3 years and start something in Bihar. We are the example . Although we are still in loss but we hope to be profitable by 2009. Till then we will go on. Samman Foundation is another examples. There are other people who are doing right things.

Its the people who are born in 1980s , have the responsibilities to build the bihar. We should not shirk the responsibility. Ultimately I am seeing a day when all biharis are getting jobs in home state , that too at higher level and peole from maharashtra, punjab, and south are coming to work in organisation floated by us.

I may be dreaming but my conviction in Bihar story is increasing day by day. It is due to some individuals like atul, chandan, rajiv, mayank, samir, sanjay, ajit, ashok, manoj, saroj, tvs who have believed and imparted their infectious optimism in me and my friends.

With best wishes

Ravi Chandra
